Upshur Helping Hands

Friends helping new friends 2019

The Upshur Helping Hands Work Team is affiliated with the Upshur Cooperative Parish and First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon, which have been sponsoring work teams to help our fellow mountaineers in southern West Virginia for over 20 years.  The Upshur Helping Hands work team returned to Caretta June 16-22, to work with Big Creek People in Action, Inc., in McDowell County.  This year 6 youth and 4 adults made the trip and again this year we were joined by another group of youth from Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C.  The work team strives to help the community and local folks with building repairs, to make their homes safe, warm, and dry.  The group brings hope, encouragement, and love to the residents by demonstrating caring through sharing.

Projects this year included the following:

  • Porch roof
  • Finishing a bathroom and flooring
  • Dry wall in a bathroom and flooring
  • Digging a ditch line
  • Replacing a floor in a trailer
  • Painting and installing fascia and putting up gutter
  • Replacing a tub with a shower and widening a doorway

This mission trip always has a lasting impact on the youth who participate.  They have the opportunity to learn many useful skills and build relationships that will last a lifetime.  Most importantly, there is that spirit of community and the blessings that come with service to others.
